The textual edition of the seventh motet of the cycle is based solely on Librone 1 (ff. 168v–169r). Like the rest of this cycle, it was copied by Scribe A, who made just one small copying mistake by forgetting an r in the word aeternum (‘etenum’ in C).
This motet was sung during the Agnus in which Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is thematized, just as in the text of the motet where Christ’s blood on the cross and its healing properties for the human race are likewise referred to (‘quem redemisti, Christe, pretiosissimo sanguine tuo’).
The first part of the text was often used as a penitential antiphon (in processions often associated with Lent),^[1] while the second part can be found as an antiphon in books of hours. Here too the text is connected with a penitential context and is used for the recitation of the Seven Penitential Psalms. Furthermore, both texts (with slight variations) are used as prayers in books of hours: for instance the version ‘Parce domine, parce peccatis meis et quamvis incessabiliter delinquenti continua paena debeatur ... per tuam misericordiam adipisci non despero perdicant Per Iesum Christum’ is found in a miscellaneous fifteenth-century manuscript (Uppsala, Universitetsbibliotek, MS C 80 m), introduced by the rubric ‘Incipit devota oratio beati Augustini episcopi’.^[2]
